چکیده

Picosecond electrical pulse excitation of the ballistic three-branch junctions (TBJs) was performed to investigate the electrical response at terahertz frequencies. The generation of picosecond electrical pulses and the signal detection with sub-picosecond temporal resolution were achieved by a photoconductive switch and the time-resolved electro-optical sampling technique, respectively, with the help of the femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser system. The electrical response of a TBJ rectifier to the 1.75-ps-wide incident pulse was successfully measured and its frequency spectrum was not degraded in the tested frequency range, as compared to the incident excitation.

Ballistic Electron Transport in Nanoscale Three-Branch Junctions

Presented here is an experimental study on a novel electron device utilizing ballistic electron transport. This device is a three-terminal structure comprised of lithographically defined Y-shaped two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a compound semiconductor heterostructure. Ballistic electron transport causes a nonlinear input-output transfer curve, which can be exploited for signal rectifica...

Dynamics of two-photon-induced three-photon absorption in nanosecond, picosecond, and femtosecond regimes.

Based on five-level rate-equation theory, we develop the laser-pulse-duration dependence of two-photon-absorption-induced singlet and triplet excited-state absorptions (ESAs). We present analytical expressions for the effective three-photon absorption coefficients caused by both singlet and triplet ESAs under the pulsed excitation on time scales from femtoseconds to microseconds. We demonstrate...

The influence of the excitation pulse length on ultrafast magnetization dynamics in nickel

The laser-induced demagnetization of a ferromagnet is caused by the temperature of the electron gas as well as the lattice temperature. For long excitation pulses, the two reservoirs are in thermal equilibrium. In contrast to a picosecond laser pulse, a femtosecond pulse causes a non-equilibrium between the electron gas and the lattice. By pump pulse length dependent optical measurements, we fi...

Fluorescence lifetime three-dimensional microscopy with picosecond precision using a multifocal multiphoton microscope

The combination of pulsed-mode excitation multifocal multiphoton microscopy with a high-repetition, time-gated intensified CCD camera enables efficient three-dimensional ~3D! fluorescence lifetime imaging. With a 200-ps gate opening at 76 MHz repetition rate, fluorescence decay can be traced in a sequence of images with varying delays between pulse and gate. Fluorophore lifetimes are measured w...

Intraband carrier kinetics and picosecond pulse shaping in field-enhanced bulk semiconductor absorbers.

Picosecond pulse propagation through a field-enhanced waveguide bulk semiconductor saturable absorber is studied numerically. Fast switching from unsaturated absorption to delayed strong saturation and gain, as well as the predicted dependence of saturation energy on electric field, is based on intraband carrier kinetics and electric-field dynamics in the absorber and can lead to improved, cont...
